Supporting Students Working Toward the Personal Financial Planning Certificate

The Joseph G. Devanney Scholarship covers the registration fee for students enrolling in either of the Personal Financial Planning Certificate program capstone courses: MGMT X 430.38 Personal Financial Planning Capstone (PFP) or MGMT X 430.516 Financial Plan Development and Presentation (PFP Accelerated). It is named after the 20-year program instructor considered to be the “grandfather” of the certificate, Joseph Devanney (1923-2006).

The Devanney Estate established a fund to award one scholarship each academic quarter to a UCLA Extension student. The award is not based on financial need, and applicants are not required to submit financial documentation.

Financial planner assisting female client

Decorated World War II and Korean War veteran, Joe Devanney, retired from the army with the rank of major. He taught at UCLA Extension for 20 years–up until the week before his death—and was the ultimate UCLA fan, often found at football and basketball games.

Devanney died at age 83 in 2006, the same year he was an inaugural recipient of the UCLA Extension Dean’s Distinguished Instructor Award.
